GD note: This witnessed event is left unedited, so any typos and/or fucked up grammar belong to the ones who wrote it. Blame them.

Prologue: We decided to do things the easy way by writing this and emailing it to Lord K, although he said we could ‘just fucken write it on a tree and send it to me’.

We started our Friday afternoon by indulging ourselves with beer preparing for Jalometalli metal music festival. The festival was held for the 7th time here in our home town, Oulu. Jalometalli has been bringing more underground and old school metal acts to Northern Finland, while Club Teatria, on itself, has been concentrating on more mainstream acts. With great enthusiasm we head towards the festival area.

Jalometalli area had not changed much from latest years. The whole thing seemed still very well organized; there were no lines to the changing of wristbands and from there we continued towards cloakroom. That came handy because we had beer in our backpack. You could always come out from the area get your backpack, walk 30 meters, sit down to the lawn, drink beer and talk with the head of the security of VIP area. The area hold two stages, main stage was outside and the inside of the club acted as the second stage. Both were fairly good size, surrounded by drinking areas and food stands.

Friday:

Sadistic Intent:

Sadistic Intent

Sadistic Intent started playing at the same time as we got past security check. Perfect timing, as always. Sadistic Intent played fucken tight death metal. It was a pleasure watching these guys rip away at the main stage. Very good start off for this event (we naturally skipped the crappy power metal bands that were first acts of Friday). Especially good was ‘Ancient Black Earth’ which we were playing with Frets on Fire while drinking beer at NGA’s place. You can see the video from here.

Mortal Sin:

Mortal Sin

The most waited gig of Friday was here. Mortal Sin, the “next” Metallica as some have stated years back was ready to thrash our asses off at the second stage. These guys have not lost their skills in performing their old school thrash, unlike the before mentioned group. They executed their music like clock work, with years of experience. There were surprisingly small crowd on the gig, which enabled free movement for NGA to film few songs with his digital camera. His Matt Damon’ish/Guy Pearce’ish looks enabled to the fact also. The best moment by far was ‘I am Immortal’. This song made the crowd and us go mad with thrash. You can see the video from here.

Possessed:

Possessed

One of the early pioneers of Death Metal, Possessed reformed last year in the lead of vocalist Jeff Becerra with guys from Sadistic Intent. Becerra was rolled to the stage in his wheelchair and when we got past the wheelchair jokes we started to enjoy the show. Becerra sounded vicious as ever and you got to give the man respect getting those kinds of growls while sitting, not to mention getting to the stage and performing! Possessed was one of the best acts in the entire festival. Satisfied, we left the area without seeing Overkill, to endeavor in more beer drinking. Check out ‘My Belief’ here.

Saturday:

We woke up at 9.30 and before hangover kicked in started drinking beer. We warmed up for the day playing Sotajumala, Kypck and Trouble. After sauna and rather nice amounts of wine and beer we head to Jalometalli to catch the shows.

Sotajumala:

Sotajumala

Sotajumala has been recognized well with their new album, at least in Finland. Their first album was a piece of shit filled with war references. Those war references are still there but the music now kills like a Finnish guerrilla squad during WW II. As we entered the area Sotajumala had already started to play. So long perfect timing. That really did not matter as we quickly succumbed into their music.

The crowd acted very well with band and their singer Mynni Luukkainen really kept the crowd going. We were also nodding approvingly (you know metalheads nod approvingly to things they see good) to their drummer, who really blasted those skins. The moshpit was a surprise to us. It looked like a bunch of gnomes were dancing around a Christmas tree. First time we witnessed this lame American kind of moshpit, in which people were basically just running around. It was also the first time we saw a ‘wall of death’ in a Finnish metal gig. We were standing just in front of it and it surely was a funny view. To people who do not know what a ‘wall of death’ is: The crowd is divided to two parts and they run towards each other crushing to each other.

Sotajumala smashed the crowd and they also played a new song, which was on par with their latest album’s material. The only strange thing on it was the strange clear vocal scream that Mynni did. Check out the video of the new song from here.

Mayhem:

Mayhem

We went to see Mayhem just out of pure interest on what do they sound like and what they would do onstage. We had not listened to Mayhem prior to the gig, so it was all new to us. We, not fans of black metal, found the gig boring. There were some parts that we enjoyed though. Parts of them included those double bass and massive riffing parts. Other things we found enjoyable and funny was the fact that Attila had a noose onstage. He was waiving it a lot. Their drummer also had a weird cage like drum stand. Anyways here is ‘Ancient (fore)skin’.

Trouble:

Trouble

Trouble has been said to be those bands that were carrying the heavy metal flag during the 80s. This was exactly what they did on stage also. These old hippie look-a-likes rocked with their cock out and their groovy music really kept the audience and us captivated. Their current singer had a true rock sound while singing and speaking as seen on the video only a click away.

Satyricon:

Satyricon

They were just bland boring with only a few good riffs and parts. Most of this gig was spent on the drinking area. NGA still managed to get this clip.

KYPCK:

KYPCK

This Russian singing Finnish doom metal band just released their first album during spring, while concentrating for some gigs during summer. KYPCK was the last performer of the festival and their doom fitted perfectly for the slightly-starting-to-sober-up moment. KYPCK really did a great performance in ending the festival. Music was top-notch and their vocalist sang in an impressive way. We have to note that their drummer Hiili Hiilesmaa had the biggest ride cymbal we have ever seen anyone hitting. Their guitarist also had a quite unique guitar which you can see below:

Guitar?

The gems of the performance were ‘1917’ and ‘Stalingrad’. You can view ‘Gidrolokator & Predatel’ here (bloody NGA ran out of memory during Stalingrad).

Epilogue:

All in all, Jalometalli was really well organized event with an interesting line-up for many people liking different genres of metal. They announced their next year’s headliner on Saturday, which is Voivod. You can actually buy tickets already for the next year’s event. Got to admit, we are not too stoked about Voivod. We are waiting for rest of the line-up to be revealed, before signing up for the next festival.
